Mangosteen in in fact recommended by DR. Oz. Let me be clear here, Dr. Oz Does Not recommend or endorse any particular brand or company. I saw a recent TV clip where he recommended mangosteen as a # 3 food / supplement that can offer good health benefits.
Number one on his list was consuming the purple sweet potato, having the highest antioxidant potency over other sweet potatoes. In other sweet potatoes and yams, the deeper the yellow or orange color, the higher the concentration of beta carotene. Number 2 was Omega 3, especially DHA. He mentioned that in his personal regimen of supplements was a good quality multi-vitamin from a large company, a calcium, preferably 1000 mg and again Omega 3, the DHA Omega 3.
Dr. Oz did also make a statement that when choosing supplements, do your due diligence and check out the company or companies producing the supplements. He had also answered the question, “Why take Health Supplements?’ His answer or personal opinion is that only 1% of people get the proper nutrition necessary for good health from their diets. That is a discouraging number.
Sweet potatoes, when baked with the skin on, also have a high concentration, of vitamin A, vitamin C, manganese, copper, dietary fiber, vitamin B6, potassium and iron.
As a general rule, fruits with a dark purple or red color tend to have high concentrations of antioxidants, the darker, the better. That would be the reason Dr. Oz would recommend mangosteen, for it is rich in antioxidants, helping fight free radical damage in the body. Fresh mangosteen fruit is difficult to find in the U.S., and expensive. You are better off with it in supplement form, made from pure or as close to pure rind or pericarp as it is commonly known, as that is where the high concentrations reside. The rind is extremely bitter, and inedible from fresh, so I recommend a high quality supplement instead.

i bought a bottle of smart basics 100% pure organic mangosteen juice online, it has a pale yellow color and smells sour to me. is this normal?
Hi Donna,
I checked out the company website where you bought your product. As for the color, that sounds about right. The actual fruit is whitish in color, and may contain some “yellowish color as well. The fruit tastes something like between a cross between a cross between a pineapple and a peach and is fairly acidic, and is considered by may to be the finest tasting fruit in the world, Dubbed by the Queen of England in the late 1800′s as the “Queen of Fruits”. The site doesn’t go into detail about how the product is processed , or where it is processed. Mangosteen fruit is grown primarily in Southeast Asia, a member of the pine family, believe it or not. and is difficult, if not impossible to grow outside of that region. It does not keep well and many feel it is more trouble that it’s worth to process the actual fruit / juice for shipment abroad. As for the sour smell, given some of the above info, this mat be normal. Check to see if there is a date code on the product. I checked out their website thoroughly, the company, or at least their domain is fairly new, is registered in Boca Raton, Florida, and it appears that the product is shipped into the U.S. from somewhere abroad ,looking at the return policy. Fresh mangosteen, whether fruit or juice, shipped into the U.S., is required by law to be irradiated for food safety reasons. Many companies use sodium benzoate as a preservative as well, though not mentioned for this product. By far, the highest concentrations of xanthones and many other important phytonutrients are found in the pericarp or thick rind of the fruit, not in the fruit itself. This pericarp, when fresh is extremely bitter, unpalatable, and probably none or very little of it is contained in this product, or the taste would be unbearable. When dried, the pericarp has little flavor. I know this is a lot of info, but buying a mangosteen juice product is a complicated matter. I have done a great deal of research on mangosteen , hence the product available through my site is pure dried pericarp rind in gelatin capsules, avoiding all of the above potential health and product safety issues. You can check out the following link from the vendor I use which is certificate of analysis, most companies won’t publish this info, I know for a fact. http://www.naturalhomecures.net/mangosteen/buynow/certificate-of-mangosteen-analysis. In closing, and in all fairness, I won’t comment on the quality of the product you purchased, but I would advise to be cautious when purchasing a mangosteen juice product. I’m not trying to persuade you to by my products either. however, through my “travels” on the subject, I believe our product is the most potent and safest available. Lastly, as for the sour smell, I would call the company direct and ask them. Hope this helps. Thanks for your question. Dave Knop – admin and owner of mangosteenhealthsupplement.com.
