Is Mangosteen Safe? Find Out!

People who have never heard of mangosteen often ask me, is mangosteen safe? My answer is yes. There are just a few exceptions I’ve run across, and please note, this is regarding “pure mangosteen”. In rare instances, some people are allergic to it. The way you can tell is that you develop itchiness, sometimes severe. One option is to stop taking the supplement for 2 weeks, and then try again, cutting the dosage in half. The only other known health risk is if you are taking Coumadin, or Crystalline warfarin sodium, it is a blood thinner or anti- coagulant, often used in heart patients. Please consult your physician if you are taking Coumadin and are considering taking a mangosteen supplement.

The other thing to consider of course would be is the mangosteen supplement you are using or are going to use a pure product, meaning not blended with other products. Does it have added chemicals or preservatives such as sodium benzoate, a preservative. Is it a proprietary blend? Usually meaning the manufacturer isn’t listing all the ingredients, and probably not listing the amount of mangosteen in the product. That would be the reason Dr. Oz would recommend mangosteen, for it is rich in antioxidants, helping fight free radical damage in the body. Fresh mangosteen fruit is difficult to find in the U.S., and expensive. You are better off with it in supplement form, made from pure or as close to pure rind or pericarp as it is commonly known, as that is where the high concentrations reside. The rind is extremely bitter, and inedible from fresh, so I recommend a high quality supplement instead.

Does Mangosteen Have Any Nutritional Value?

That’s a good question, does Mangosteen have any nutritional Value?
The answer is yes, but not a great deal, but nutritional value is not the main reason for a person to consume this supplement.. The fruit is delicious, being described as tasting something like a cross between a peach, pineapple, and some say strawberry with hints of a vanilla ice cream flavor. Fresh Mangosteen fruit is extremely hard to find in the U.S, and usually very pricey. The fruit is small, and by the time you get the fruit out of the rind, and each segment usually contains a seed, their is not much left to eat.

As far as nutritional value by itself, the fruit contains 1-7 mg of vitamin C per 100 / gram, carbohydrates – 14-18 grams per 100 grams. It also contains 0.2 mg per 100 grams, 1-5 grams of dietary fiber per 100 grams, and 31 μg^ per 100 grams of folic acid. These are amounts at 5% or above of the DRI. Many commercially available mangosteen products available today are in juice form, mixed with juices such as blueberry, apple, strawberry, cranberry, raspberry and grape juices.

A word of warning however, if you are after strictly the benefits of mangosteen, these juice products commercially available are likely to have very little of the rind or pericarp in them, and that is where a vast majority of xanthones and other phytonutrients come from.  Of all of these products I’ve seen and used, the label also does not list the amount of mangosteen actually in the product. Mangostreen juice products may taste good, and the others juices, have nutritional value. However, the primary reason for consuming mangosteen for the health benefits come from the rind or pericarp or hull of the fruit, which is inedible, extremely bitter. The rind or pericarp is where the powerful xanthones and other important phytonutrients exist.

Mangosteen and Your Health and Wellness

Mangosteen and wellness seem to make more sense the more research I do.
